Mix It Up March

So this months is a mix of strength and cardio after Jan’s cardioย and Feb’s strength.

During this month it’ll be a mix of four exercise; Push Ups, Plank, Squats and Climbers.

This should really work the core while not forgetting the arms & legs ๐Ÿ™‚

To mix it up further you can mix up each move. I’ll be picking from the following exercises, if you know any other great exercises please let me know!

Push Ups – Standard, clapping, wide stance, narrow stance, declined and one-handed.
Plank – Elbow, two point plank, side plank, plank row & up and down plank.
Squats – Body weight, jumping squat, pistol squat, weighted, split squats and calf squats (not letting your heels touch the ground).
Climbers – Standard, drunken and full cross over.

February Push Ups

So this months is a strength month after Jan’s cardio, I’m going for push ups because when they are done right they can really work many muscle groups at the same time. The image below gives a great over view of whats worked when you do a push up.

The great thing about push ups are that you can mix them up so much to suit yourself. If you struggle you can do knee push ups, or if you really want to challenge yourself you can do clap, off-balance, declined, weighted, diamond, wide, one-handed push ups and so many more…..

These two photos just show the classic push ups ๐Ÿ™‚

I really enjoyed this months challenge, it was planned better and it didn’t kill my legs like the jumping jacks did!
I also noticed a change in my arms and shoulders which is great ๐Ÿ™‚

I am really looking forward to March’s challenge now.

January Jumping Jacks

After seeing these monthly challenges like “Plank a Day” and “Squats” I did a few of them during last year and found them to be pretty good.

I have decided that for 2014 I will do a challenge every month, one month focusing on cardio and the next month focusing on strength. Kalaย has said she’s going to join me with these challenges so I’m going to create these with two levels, one for me and one for Kala.

For January I thought I’d kick it off with cardio to burn of them Christmas calories and theme it a little so welcome to #JaysJanuaryJumpingJacks

Update: 31/01/2014
Firstly I’ll admit that I didn’t complete this challenge, I stopped on the 23rd and just haven’t done anymore.

What I have learnt is that 1) my shins struggle with this many jumping jacks and picking up my running. These just made my calves so tight which hurt my shins and frankly while training for a marathon I can’t have this. 2) Rest day’s need planning!!!

If you completed the month then cracking effort and I doff my cap to you.

On to February’s strength based challenge ๐Ÿ™‚ย
